THE EVENT:
Expo markers make a big splash on the backsplash tiles of New York City’s underground subway stations. Located in one of NYC’s busiest subway stations, is a growing mural that has done the impossible, stop a New Yorker in their steps.
People arrive at the main atrium of the station, and through cleverly disguised vents, the familiar and striking smell of expo markers diffuses out, getting people for all walks of life to stop in their tracks to find out where that smell is coming from. The signs around help them find the area where the mural is being formed and markers spread around give everyone the chance to add to it.
The designs ranged from simple drawings like charts and rainbows to the elaborately decorated and detailed art pieces too complex to put into words. All people expressed themselves in the best ways that they knew how and it all started with one scent.
